Nutrition Tips for a Healthy Mommy and Baby

Your diet during pregnancy affects not only you but your baby as well. Eating the right foods will give you the nutrients needed to nourish your little one. Whether you are still carrying them to term or have given birth and are breastfeeding them, proper nutrition guidance is essential.

As your friendly and trusted provider of midwifery in Saint Paul, Minnesota, allow us to share some nutrition tips that you and your baby will surely love.

  • Eat healthily and follow a pattern.
When you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you need certain nutrients like protein, iron, folic acid, and iodine. It’s also important to get enough calcium. Also, make healthy snack choices and avoid junk food.
  • Mind your calories.
By the second and third trimesters, pregnant women are required to eat 340 to 450 extra calories per day.
  • Take your supplements.
Find the right one for you by talking with our OB/GYN.
  • Limit sugar and caffeine intake.
Our prenatal care in Minnesota advises our clients to reduce their caffeine and sugar intake as much as possible. You may opt for decaf and unsweetened beverages and food.
  • Avoid alcohol and cigarettes.
These substances can greatly affect your baby’s health. This increases birth defects, premature babies, underweight babies, and stillborn births. Exposure to drugs and alcohol before birth has been proven to cause behavior problems in early childhood.

Learning all about women’s health will help you become a great mother to your children. Not only does it benefit them, but it will also keep you healthy and strong enough to care for them.
